Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This is done by the insertion of very fine needles at precise Acupuncture points on the body. During treatment, meridians (of energy channels in the body) are activated which connect to underlying tissues and organs, in order to generate a movement of energy or “Qi.” Commonly used Acupuncture points are found on the forearm and lower legs, the head, back, chest, abdomen, and points on the ears. Occasionally, heat or electrical stimulation is used to enhance the action of the Acupuncture.
Medical acupuncture is the integration of classical Chinese acupuncture with the knowledge of Western medicine. This style is derived from the 2000-year-old tradition of acupuncture practiced in China and Japan. Medical acupuncturists incorporate techniques developed by Western physicians over the past century, utilizing an ever-expanding knowledge base from modern research about human anatomy and physiology. The practice continues to be refined as evidence-based medical research expands.
During your first visit, Dr. Papadopoulos will conduct a detailed history to learn about your medical conditions as well as your medications and other herbals, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. He will enquire about your present concerns and personal goals regarding why you desire Acupuncture and what outcomes you wish to attain. Many questions from the doctor may be unusual to you, because much information will be requested from the philosophies of Ancient Chinese Medicine.
Dr. Papadopoulos will then conduct a physical examination appropriate to your medical concerns and diagnoses. The examination may include observation of the tongue and examination of the pulses in your wrists, both of which are examinations used in Ancient Chinese Medicine.
After an appropriate history and pertinent physical examination, Dr. Papadopoulos will make an assessment (again including Ancient Chinese Medicine philosophies) and devise an Acupuncture treatment plan that will begin during the first visit.
Usually, there will be follow-up evaluations and Acupuncture treatments after reasonable intervals of time. In addition to subsequent Acupuncture treatments, you may also receive moxibustion or cupping appropriate to your needs and desires.
Please see the section “Doctor, what’s this Acupuncture all about?” This goes into more detail about the style of Acupuncture that Dr. Papadopoulos practices.
